Five years after our previous visit to the E & O, we chose to stay in the Heritage Wing Rudyard Kipling writer's suite, rather than the Victory Annex corner suite which was previously our regular choice. The Kipling Suite is very spacious and is also one of the few Heritage Wing suites with a balcony looking out to the Andaman Sea, which is a benefit that we enjoy, particularly in the early evening. The decor has a "boutique" feel, well furnished with antique pieces, and a superbly comfortable king bed. The room was also quiet, even with events taking place in the ballroom and other public areas. Sarkies restaurant was being refurbished while we were there so there was no evening buffet but the other restaurants fully catered for our needs. As usual, the staff in the restaurants, and throughout the hotel, were unfailingly friendly and efficient which made for another memorable stay. The E & O remains our favourite hotel in South-East Asia, both for the quality of the experience and, we believe, remarkable value for money.

Staying and eating here is a good experience. You get a taste of colonialism, the local food and western food. Some positive things: The staff always helped with the bags. Nice Views The buffet had made to order food sections which includes char keow teow. Get that here if you don't want to go to a street vendor for this plus its included with your hotel stay. Some negative things: The reason I gave this place 4 stars instead of 5 was because the service was not always exceptional. For example the doorman didn't always open the door us. Compared to other nice hotels in Malaysia, that is actually terrible. The made to order stuff was nice, but for those who want a western breakfast, the quality of their western food items in the buffet didn't seem that great.

Currently staying at the E&O in the Heritage Wing & writing this review whilst poolside. The hotel is stunning & full of old world charm whilst offering modern day conveniences. The George Town suite is very spacious, clean & tastefully decorated. The staff are faultless & nothing is too much trouble. The breakfast selection is wonderful & there’s proper coffee. This hotel has exceeded all my expectations & I would not hesitate to recommend. If you’re thinking of staying here make sure you’re in the Heritage Wing to benefit from all the perks - you’ll be pleased you did!

A story of two halves - a hotel of two halves. The historic side with the main entrance and a little bit of old world charm and the other side - modern and the feel of a tourist hotel. You pay your money and takes your choice. We were in a Straits Suite on the historic side. Nice breakfast served in the Palm court - with terrace outside overlooking the water - calm and great staff. This contrasts with an early breakfast had on the other side of the hotel in a huge buffet style space. The suite was adequate - limited storage space but the very kind duty manage arranged for a chest of drawers to be brought to the room. Pool at the front with sun loungers (needing repair / updating) was pleasant. All in all a good place to stay - but lacking investment and needing a good update and refurbishment - but this is always hard for big old hotels unless you are The Aman!

Vast Penang hotel for guests visiting the island and enjoying Georgetown, almost exclusively full of western tourists. Breakfast was brilliant and probably most expansive buffet we’ve seen in this area. Slightly out to the side of the town so quieter than other options. Pool area pleasant but not that spacious, rooms perfectly reasonable but not true five star when compared to what you might find in say, Langkawi five star, but comfortable, safe and pleasant.
